Recently, FSSC 22000 Foundation has released Version 6 (V6) of this scheme and brought a number of significant modifications aimed at enhancing its effectiveness.

These alterations are poised to have a profound influence on organizations operating within the food chain. Therefore, it is crucial to stay informed about the nature of these changes and their implications for your business.

So, what is the driving force behind the FSSC 22000 V6 Update? 

What’s Driving the FSSC 22000 V6 Update?

  • Integrate ISO 22003-1:2022 (requirements for bodies providing food safety management system audits and certification)
  • Strengthen the requirements in areas that will help organizations meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Incorporate V6 development survey feedback

Thr Eight (8) key changes in FSSC 22000 V6 that you need to know.

  • Realignment of Food Chain Categories: The scheme now aligns with ISO 22003-1:2022, ensuring consistency in categorizing organizations within the food chain.
  •       Expanded Scope: The scope has been broadened to include Trading and Brokering (FII), recognizing their significant role in the food safety management system.
  • Removal of Farming and FSSC 22000-Quality: The farming sector and FSSC 22000-Quality have been removed from the scheme. Integration of Food Safety and Quality Culture: Requirements for fostering a culture of both food safety and quality have been integrated, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach.
  •           New Requirements: Additional requirements have been introduced, including quality control, food loss and waste management, and equipment management, to address emerging challenges and industry best practices.
  •        Strengthened Additional Requirements: Existing additional requirements, such as allergen management and environmental monitoring, have been enhanced to improve food safety measures.
  •       Changes to Certification Process: The certification process requirements have been modified and clarified to streamline the certification journey and ensure consistency.
  •        Improved Traceability: Certificates includes a QR code for enhanced traceability, providing stakeholders with easy access to relevant information.
  • What is the transition timeline?

FSSC 22000 Version 6 offers a 12-month window for organizations to prepare and for certification bodies (CBs) to implement and obtain accreditation. The initial audits for Version 6 will commence on April 1, 2024, and all participating organizations must successfully complete the V6 upgrade audit before March 31, 2025.
